Discover Naromoru with Idan Barn Suites and Café: Things to Do Nearby

Naromoru Neighborhood Walking Trails

Located on the Nanyuki–Naromoru Highway, Idan Barn Suites and Café offers the best of both worlds — easy access to Nanyuki’s lively town and the quieter charm of Naromoru. While Nanyuki is known as a bustling hub, Naromoru is a hidden gem at the foothills of Mount Kenya, where adventure meets culture and relaxation. Whether you’re staying with us or simply dropping in for coffee, brunch, or dinner, here are some of the most memorable experiences you can enjoy nearby:

1. Mount Kenya Adventures

(approx 20–55 minutes by car)

Naro Moru is the gateway to the classic Naro Moru ascent route of Mount Kenya, making our location the perfect base for climbers. From gentle day hikes in the forest to multi-day treks up to Point Lenana, Nelion, or Batian, there’s something for every hiker looking for a convenient and cozy lodge before and after their climb.

For those choosing the Sirimon route, the park gate is about 1 hour’s drive from us, offering flexible access to another popular trail. Many hikers also combine Chogoria (on the Eastern side) with either Sirimon or Naro Moru for a stunning cross-mountain trek — and Idan Barn is a comfortable staging point before or after the journey.

2. Game Drives at Renowned Conservancies

  • Ol Pejeta Conservancy (just 1 hour drive (approx. 42 km): Spot the Big Five, chimpanzees, and rhinos — including the last two northern white rhinos on Earth.
  • Solio Ranch ( ~45–60 minutes drive, approx. 60 km): Famous for its thriving rhino population, plus lions, leopards, and cheetahs.
  • Ol Jogi Wildlife Conservancy (~1.5 hours via Nanyuki, approx. 66 km): A unique reserve that’s also home to Potap, Africa’s only grizzly bear.

3. Walking Trails Around Naromoru

You don’t have to drive into Nanyuki for a dose of nature — Naro Moru is a birder’s paradise. Just outside town, the Naro Moru River Lodge has over 5 km of riverside forest trails rich with birdlife, including Hartlaub’s Turaco, Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, Tacazze Sunbird, and Red-fronted Parrots. These quiet trails are also home to Colobus monkeys and make for peaceful morning or evening walks.

Beyond the lodge, the countryside paths and farm roads around Naro Moru are excellent for casual strolls, birdwatching, and enjoying fresh highland air. Whether guided or self-paced, it’s one of the simplest and most rewarding activities close to Idan Barn Suites.

4. Horse Riding

(10 minute drive)

Through our local partners, we arrange guided horse rides across scenic farmland and open trails with stunning views of Mount Kenya. A wonderful experience for both beginners and seasoned riders.

5. Mau Mau Caves

(10 minute drive via Bantu Lodge)

Step back into history with a guided visit to the Mau Mau Caves, once a hideout during Kenya’s independence struggle. Surrounded by forest, it’s a fascinating mix of culture, history, and adventure.

6. Ngare Ndare Forest Park

(About 1 to 1.5 hours by car (approx. 60 km)

A perfect day trip: walk along the canopy walkway, swim in turquoise pools, and enjoy the forest’s lush scenery. Ideal for families, groups, and nature enthusiasts.

7. Aberdare National Park Ndaragwa

(About 1 – 1.5 hour drive via Naromoru Mweiga Rd)

Discover the Aberdare/Nyandarua ranges, with breathtaking waterfalls, bamboo forests, moorlands, and abundant wildlife. A must for anyone seeking a different kind of mountain adventure.

8. Dining at our Barn Café

Before heading off to Samburu, Isiolo, or Meru, enjoy a stopover at our on-site café for coffee, brunch, or hearty meals prepared fresh. Guests also love dining at the nearby Trout Tree restaurant in Nanyuki — but our cozy café makes it easy to relax and dine right here in Naromoru.

  • Local farm visits – Learn about crops, livestock, and taste fresh produce.
